Rethinking SMART Goals: Focus, Behavior Change, and Ownership
Smart goals are not necessarily old fashioned, and many of the goals that we set are smart in itself as well. Honestly, it's less about the syntax in which you're writing your goals and more about the how you are setting your goals and how you manage with them. So, a good goal in our humble experience and our humble opinion should be something where you are actually involved in setting those goals. It should be a goal that it's actually changing behavior. So, you wanna set a goal that's not just, do more of this and do it faster and row harder, it should be a goal that's actually makes you work smarter. It should be a goal that you set for yourself, or the team sets for everyone.
It should be a goal that creates focus in an organization, not just, we do more of this and figure out how. Smart goals are not necessarily old fashioned, but if an organization uses smart goals and the CEO sets those goals for many hundreds and thousands of people, that's of course horse shit.
