Don't 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 scale your headcount. Scale your ability to execute.
In today’s fast-paced business environment, setting goals is only the first step. The real challenge lies in ensuring that teams are aligned, motivated, and focused on outcomes that truly matter. This is where OKRs, Objectives and Key Results, have proven to be an effective framework for driving meaningful results.
In any organization, employee time is one of the most valuable, and expensive, resources. Yet many companies struggle to ensure that all this effort translates into real progress. You might see teams working hard every day, logging long hours, and still not achieving the results you expect. Why does this happen? Often, it’s because effort isn’t aligned with outcomes that truly matter.
Many organizations claim they “do OKRs.” They hold workshops, set quarterly goals, and create dashboards. But if nothing about how your teams plan, prioritize, and make decisions actually changes, then you’re not doing OKRs, you just have them.
Many leaders equate visibility with alignment. If everyone can access every document, meeting note, and project update, surely the organization will run more smoothly, or so the thinking goes.
Every leader knows how hard it can be to get an entire organization to move in the same direction. Even when everyone’s smart, motivated, and committed, things start to drift. Marketing talks in campaigns and KPIs. Product talks in epics and Jira tickets. Sales talks in dollar signs and quotas.
Hybrid work is here to stay. For most organizations we work with, that means some employees are in the office, others are remote, and collaboration happens across multiple time zones, channels, and tools.
Most organizations set goals behind closed doors. Leaders decide priorities, a presentation is shown at an all-hands, and then teams go back to working in their own silos. It’s familiar, and also part of the problem.
When different teams inside a company work on their own priorities, it can feel like everyone is moving in different directions. Projects take longer, progress slows down, and results are harder to measure.
At first glance, “Excite our customers” sounds inspiring. But as an objective, it’s too vague to guide any decisions or trade-offs across a quarter. You could do a hundred things that might excite customers, new campaigns, better service, improved UX, yet the statement itself doesn’t help you decide which of those things to pursue or how to know if you succeeded.
